Anderson built its reputation on being the cheapest name on the shelf that still works. That reputation is mostly deserved — provided you understand what you are buying and where the money was saved.
What the AM-15 is
The AM-15 is Anderson Manufacturing's AR-15 pattern line: stripped lowers, complete lowers, uppers and complete rifles built to mil-spec dimensions at the value end of the market. The receivers are forged 7075-T6 aluminum, which is the same material specification used by manufacturers charging several times more.
Where the value actually is
Stripped lowers. This is the sweet spot. A forged, in-spec lower is a forged, in-spec lower — it is a serialized housing for parts you choose. Paying a premium here buys you a rollmark.
Blem receivers. Cosmetic flaws only: a mark in the anodizing, a small blemish on the flat. Function is unaffected and the discount is real. If the rifle is going to get scratched anyway, buy the blem.
Complete lowers. Convenient, but the fire control group and furniture are basic. Fine as a starting point, first thing most people replace.
Where the corners were cut
The factory trigger is the obvious one — serviceable, gritty, heavier than it needs to be. Furniture is basic polymer. On complete rifles, the barrel is adequate rather than exceptional; it will hold practical accuracy but it is not a match tube.
None of that is a defect. It is the trade that makes the price possible, and every one of those parts is replaceable on your schedule.
What to upgrade first
Trigger. Biggest felt improvement per dollar, by a wide margin.
Furniture. A better grip and stock change how the rifle handles more than the spec sheet suggests.
Optic and mount. Do not put a cheap optic on a rifle to save money you then spend twice.
Barrel — only if you have a specific accuracy requirement the current one is failing to meet.
Is it worth it?
As a foundation to build on: yes, clearly. As a finished rifle you never touch again: it will run, but you will notice the trigger every time you shoot it. Buy the receiver, spend the savings on the fire control group and the optic, and the result punches well above what you paid.
